The Championship will be contested at 36-holes for the next three years.
SPRING, TX (April 1, 2020)—Following a proposal submitted earlier this year by the Championships Committee, the STPGA Board of Directors approved the reduction of the Southern Texas PGA Professional Championship from 54-holes to 36-holes at the March Board Meeting. This change will take effect starting this year at Boot Ranch and will continue through the 2022 Championship. This year’s event will be September 21-22, 2020.
The Board of Directors felt that this decision was in the best interest of the PGA Member and overall participation. With more Professionals having a hard time getting away from work, the STPGA believes that a 2-day Championship will have a greater potential for participation. The Professional Championship is also a big component to other funds received from the PGA of America and the PGA Tour. The more people that play, the more revenue our tournament department could receive. Additionally, with one less day operationally, costs to running the event will go down, thus a potential for a larger tournament purse. Lastly, in a similar manner, the more people that play, the more spots we could earn for players to advance to the National PGA Professional Championship.
Following the 3-year period of conducting this Championship at 36-holes, the Championship Committee and Board of Directors will reconvene to analyze the effects, receive feedback from Members, and determine if keeping it at 36-holes is the best option.
The Southern Texas PGA is excited to conduct a great Southern Texas PGA Professional Championship at Boot Ranch this year and to conduct many great events over the years to come.
