KINGWOOD, TEXAS --- First Round Matches of the 2019 Match Play Championship were suspended due to darkness at 5:52 p.m. Play will resume at 8:00 a.m. on Tuesday, February 12.
The day started with all professionals playing a stroke play qualifying round to determine the 32 players that make up the Open Division. The next 16 players formed a separate match play bracket playing a one-and-done format for a separate purse.
In the Open Division, #1 seed Ben Kern, PGA Head Professional at Georgetown Country Club, won his match against Todd Grassi, PGA Golf Manufacturer Sales Representative at Travis Mathew, 4&3.
The Championship also includes a Senior Division. The top 16 Seniors in the morning’s stroke play qualifying make up the Senior Division of the match play bracket. Defending Champion Tim Hobby (#1 seed), PGA Teaching Professional at the Club at Sonterra, defeated PGA Life Member David Goldblum 8&7.
The 2019 Match Play Championship is being contested February 11-13 at The Clubs of Kingwood (Island Course), a 7,253- yard, par 72 layout. This marks the first major STPGA tournament The Clubs of Kingwood has hosted since Hurricane Harvey wreaked havoc on the area in 2017.
