KERRVILLE, TEXAS (June 14, 2021) – Ben Kern, PGA Head Professional at Georgetown Country Club leads the first major Championship of the year by one stroke, with a Round One score of 67 (-5). The Stroke Play Championship is being played at The Club at Comanche Trace in Kerrville, TX. Kern capped off his round with six birdies and a bogey free back nine.
Closely behind Kern is Ben Willman, PGA Teaching Professional at Axis Golf Academy with a Round One score of 68 (-4). There is a three-way tie for third between Carlos Sainz Jr, Director of Instruction at The Clubs at Houston Oaks, Lonny Alexander, PGA Teaching Professional at Onion Creek Golf Club, and Matt Trevino, PGA Director of Golf at Riverhill Country Club. Sainz Jr, Alexander and Trevino finished the day with a score of 69 (-3).
Kern looks to capture his first Section major within the Southern Texas PGA tomorrow.
The tournament also includes a Senior Division where 21 PGA Professionals ages 50 and over are competing for a separate purse. Robert Thompson, PGA Teaching Professional at Whispering Pines Golf Club leads the Senior Division with a Round One total of 69 (-3), followed by a three-way tie for second between Omar Uresti, PGA Life Member, Troy Schleicher, PGA Teaching Professional at The Woodlands Country Club - Palmer Course, and Tim Hobby, PGA Teaching Professional at The Club at Sonterra. Uresti, Schleicher and Hobby finished with a score of 71 (-1).
The Stroke Play Championship, presented by AHEAD, Texoma Golf, Club Car, Vortech Contracting, Biolyte, GT Golf Supplies and PGA TOUR is being contested on 7,020-yard Hills/Creeks Course at The Club at Comanche Trace, a private par 72 course designed by Tom Kite.
Round Two is set to start tomorrow morning at 7:30 a.m. off of #1 and #10 with our leaders going off at 9:30 a.m.
