KINGWOOD, TEXAS --- The Championship Division Final Match featured #3 seed Chad Donegan, PGA Director of Golf at Landa Park Golf Course, and #24 seed Callum McNeill, Assistant Professional at The Clubs at Houston Oaks. The match resulted in a 4&3 victory for McNeill.
McNeill took an early lead and was 4UP through nine holes and never let Donegan back in the match. By Hole 13, McNeill had a 5UP lead. Two holes later on Hole 15, both competitors made par sealing the match for McNeill. This marks McNeill’s second STPGA individual win. He also won the 2018 Southern Texas Assistant PGA Professional Championship in July. McNeill took home $2,500 of the $5,750 purse.
The Championship also included a Senior Division. In the Championship Match, #3 seed Robert Thompson, PGA Teaching Professional at Whispering Pines Golf Club, faced off against #5 seed Steve Parker, PGA Life Member. The Match was all square through eight holes. Thompson took the lead on Hole 9 after Parker’s bogey and never looked back. He bested Parker 3&2 and took home a trophy and check for $1,000. This marks Thompson third Senior Division win at the Match Play Championship. He has previously won the title in 2013 and 2017.
The 2019 Match Play Championship was contested February 11-13 at The Clubs of Kingwood (Island Course), a 7,253- yard, par 72 layout. The event started with all professionals playing a stroke play qualifying round to determine the 32 players that make up the Open Division. The next 16 players formed a separate match play bracket playing a one-and-done format for a separate purse. The top 16 Seniors in the stroke play qualifying round made up the Senior Division of the match play bracket.
