Mark Caldwell, born and raised in east Texas around Longview, first started playing golf at the age of five with his dad and has never looked back. Now, decades later, Caldwell is teaching golf to kids and giving back to the game that has given so much to him. A US Kids Top 50 Coach in the world in 2017 and 2018, Mark Caldwell lets the results of the players he’s coached do the talking for him.
Caldwell is currently the Director of Instruction at Canyon Springs Golf Club in San Antonio and founder of Total Golf Performance, a golf academy in San Antonio helping to grow and promote the game.
Caldwell credits where he’s at now to ‘cool moments’, like being able to spend a lot of time with Byron Nelson. ‘Cool moments’ like working with David Toms, major champion and 13-time PGA Tour winner, who elevated his game to being one of the top-ranked juniors in the state growing up.
He also speaks fondly of his time playing collegiate golf at Centenary College, where people like Hal Sutton, major champion and 14-time PGA Tour winner, have played too. Needless to say, Mark Caldwell has spent time around some of the best in the game.
Before Caldwell began sharing his secrets on how to play golf, he played professionally on the Adams Tight Lies Tour for four years.
When asked if he always knew that he wanted to become a PGA Professional, Caldwell grins. He tried the corporate world for a while, but after it led him back to golf Caldwell says, “it’s kind of like you knew that’s what you were meant to do”.
Today, as he teaches the game of golf to others, he enjoys being able to learn about each individual person he coaches and how their swing works. Because you never see the same two golf swings, Caldwell says that in order to be a good coach, “you’ve got to be able to be a good mind reader”. This approach has led Caldwell to being one of the most successful golf instructors in Texas.
Looking forward, the future of golf looks to be “in a good position” according to Caldwell. He credits this momentum to Tiger being ‘back’, the growth of the Southern Texas PGA Junior Golf programs, and PGA Jr. League.
