Mendez in the lead after Round One of the STPGA Professional Championship.
FREDERICKSBURG, TEXAS (September 21, 2020) - Gilbert Mendez, PGA Professional at GolfTEC - Westlake is in the lead at the 52nd Southern Texas PGA Professional Championship, presented by Club Car and OMEGA, after shooting 66 (-5) during Round One.
Sitting closely behind Mendez at 68 (-3) is Justin Engel, PGA Professional at Shadow Hawk GC.
The field of PGA Professionals is competing at Boot Ranch Golf Club, a 7,155-yard, par 72 course located amongst the Texas Hill Country in Fredericksburg. The top seven finishers from this weeks event will advance to compete in the 2021 PGA Professional Championship presented by Club Car and OMEGA in Port St. Lucie, Florida next April.
As a member of the 2019 PGA Cup Team, Ben Kern, PGA Head Professional at Georgetown Country Club is automatically exempt into the 2021 PGA Professional Championship, as is Cassey Russell, PGA Director of Golf at Big Easy Ranch, who was a top 20 finisher at the 2019 PGA Professional Championship. PGA Life Member, Omar Uresti is also eligible for the 2021 Championship as he is a past Champion of the PGA Professional Championship, winning the event in 2017.
Presented by Club Car and OMEGA, the 52nd STPGA Professional Championship marks the fifth and final Major Championship for the Southern Texas PGA that comprise the OMEGA Player of the Year Points List. This event also serves as the final opportunity for Members to earn points towards making the 2020 Texas Joe Black Cup Matches and Levy Cup Matches teams.
Previously contested as a 54-hole event, the STPGA Championship Committee decided earlier this year that the 2020 STPGA Professional Championship would be contested as a two-day, 36-hole tournament.
Round Two is set to start tomorrow morning at 8:00 a.m.
