CARROLLTON, TX – The Northern Texas PGA captured the 42nd Texas Joe Black Cup Matches by an overall points total of 13.5 to 10.5. They took a one-point lead heading into today’s Singles Matches, needing an additional six points to capture the Matches and reclaim the cup.
Team STPGA started strong, securing the first match of the morning and halving the second, but solid play from Texas Joe Black Cup Matches rookie JJ Killeen, PGA director of golf at Red Feather Golf and Social Club, in the third match, put a point on the board for Team NTPGA. Killeen won 5&4 over The Clubs of Cordillera Ranch’s PGA director of golf, Corey Roberson.
The mid-morning matches were back and forth with several ending in ties and halving the points for each team. Momentum began to go Team NTPGA’s way in matches eight, nine and ten. These three matches all had Team NTPGA Texas Joe Black Cup Matches veterans and all ended with a win for the Northern side.
The final point that Team NTPGA needed for the victory was secured in the ninth match when Brandon Veld, PGA head professional at Red Feather Golf and Social Club, won hole #17 to secure a 3&1 win over Roland Thatcher, PGA director of golf at The Woodlands Country Club. Veld is now 6-0-0 in the Texas Joe Black Cup Matches.
Heading into the 42nd playing, the overall team records were 20-19-2 in favor of the Southern Texas PGA. Now, the overall record sits level at
20-20-2.
The teams from each Section were represented by their Section President, the top playing PGA Directors of Golf, PGA Head Professionals and PGA General Managers and a Captain’s Pick. Courtney Connell, PGA head professional at Mira Vista Country Club, was captain of the Northern Texas PGA team, and Doug DeSive, PGA head professional at Dominion Country Club, served as the Southern Texas PGA captain.
The Texas Joe Black Cup Matches is an annual competition between the Northern Texas PGA and the Southern Texas PGA Sections. The event was started in 1981 to honor Joe Black, a Snyder, Texas native who was completing his first year as President of The PGA of America that year.
One point was awarded to a winning match and a half point was awarded to any match that ended in a tie after eighteen holes.
The Matches were contested at Maridoe Golf Club in Carrollton, Texas, and was presented by Club Car, Mizzen+Main and STITCH.
