The Southern Texas PGA is saddened to hear the passing of Jackie Burke Jr. on Friday, January 19th, 2024, just ten days prior to his 101st birthday. The Southern Texas PGA looks forward to honoring him during our Section Championship hosted by Champions Golf Club this September.
Most recently, the STPGA has fond memories of Mr. Burke attending the Drive, Chip, and Putt Regional Championship in 2022 and 2023 at Champions Golf Club. He was onsite both years handing out awards to the winners that were heading to Augusta National.
Jackie Burke Jr. is a member of the World Golf Hall of Fame, the Texas Golf Hall of Fame, and the Houston Sports Hall of Fame. He won both the 1956 Masters and PGA Championship. He was also the 1957 and 1973 captain of the US Ryder Cup Team.
The Vigil and Rosary will be held at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, January 23th and the Funeral Mass being held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, January 24th at St. Ignatius Loyola Catholic Church located on 7810 Cypresswood Dr. Spring, TX 77379. The burial will be on Thursday at Houston National Cemetery with family.
While the stories and his impact on the game will live on forever, his welcoming personality and joy to help people fall in love with the game of golf will be his lasting legacy.
