SUGAR LAND, TX (June 21, 2021) - The Southern Texas PGA Pro-Junior Championship presented by Callaway took place today at Riverbend Country Club in Sugar Land after taking a year off in 2020 due to COVID-19. The championship saw 21 teams compete in a stepback scramble format featuring one PGA Professional and three junior golfers. This fun event is all about PGA Professionals working with their students in a team format.
Brad Martin, PGA Life Member and his junior golfers, Jeric Ortiz, Sayers Allen, and Cesilee Morky took home the win with a team score of 58 (-14). The team carded 12 birdies and two eagles throughout the round.
“This event was a lot of fun and definitely worth joining in,” said Morky. “It’s a once in a lifetime type of deal since golf is really an independent sport but working together and relying on others makes it really enjoyable.”
Martin’s team was followed by Garrett Nobles, PGA Head Professional at Windrose Golf Club and his junior golfers, Stella Northcutt, Natasha Milinthachinda, and Jason Roettgers. Noble’s team fell short of the victory by two strokes with a team score of 60 (-12).
Riverbend PGA Head Professional, Ryan Brandt was thrilled to host this year’s Pro-Junior Championship and compete in the event as well.
“We love the kids around here. We wanted to put on a show and let them enjoy the game of golf,” said Brandt. “We also have great professionals and I wanted to become more involved in the Section and this event made that possible.”
The event was sponsored by Callaway with tee gifts for all the players and a closest to the hole competition where Clark Rangel won with an awesome shot to 18 feet. Thank you to Callaway for their support and all 21 PGA Professionals who competed and brought out 63 junior golfers.
The busy tournament season for STPGA Professionals continues next week with the 9-9-9 Pro-Pro at The Woodlands Country Club - Palmer Course on Monday June 28.
