This marks Kern’s 4th Major Championship in 2021
SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS (September 21, 2021) – Ben Kern, PGA Head Professional at Georgetown Country Club has claimed the title at the 53rd Southern Texas PGA Professional Championship after shooting rounds of 68-66 for a 36-hole score of 134 (-10). With his victory, Kern will take home a check of $8,000.
“It feels really good. Being the Section Champion means everything to me,” said Kern. “It’s an honor to have my name on the trophy with a lot of good players. The Section Champ is special.”
Coming into the final round, Kern sat tied for fifth on the leaderboard at 4-under-par, two strokes behind JJ Wood, PGA Director of Instruction at Golf Performance Group and Shane Hall, PGA Assistant Professional at Sugar Creek Country Club. With 6 birdies and an eagle in his second round, Kern climbed to the top of the leaderboard to claim his fourth Major win of the year.
Along with Kern, six other PGA Professionals earned exemptions into the 2022 PGA Professional Championship at today’s tournament. JJ Wood, PGA Director of Instruction at Golf Performance Group, Gregory Hiller, PGA Director of Instruction at TPC San Antonio, Shane Hall, PGA Assistant Professionals at Sugar Creek Country Club, Jared Jones, PGA Director of Instruction at River Oaks Country Club, Robert Scott, PGA Teaching Professional at Royal Oaks Country Club, and Derrick Dixon, PGA General Manager at Briggs Ranch Golf Club will join Kern at the PGA Professional Championship presented by Cadillac, Club Car and Rolex at OMNI Barton Creek Resort & Spa in Austin, Texas Sunday April 17 – Wednesday, April 20, 2022.
The Southern Texas PGA Professional Championship is a special victory for our players each year, honoring the memory of 6-time champion Tommy Aycock, who won the Section Championship title in four different decades.
Presented by Cadillac, Club Car, and Rolex, and supported by Titleist/Footjoy, Nike, Taylormade, Golf Channel, PGA TOUR, and Perry Weather, the 53rd STPGA Professional Championship was contested over 36-holes at Briggs Ranch Golf club in San Antonio, Texas.
This event is the final tournament of the year where players earn points toward the Rolex Player of the Year Points List as well as the 2021 Texas Joe Black Cup Matches and Levy Cup Matches teams. Players for both teams will be announced next week by the STPGA as the STPGA looks to win both cup matches later this fall against the Northern Texas PGA.
With his win we would also like to congratulate Ben Kern on being our Rolex Player of the Year, which will earn him an exemption into the 2022 Houston Open and Valero Texas Open. By placing 2nd on the Rolex Player of the Year points list, Ben Willman also earned an exemption into the 2022 Mexico Championship.
