Southern Texas PGA Leads after Day One.
Houston, Texas – The Southern Texas PGA leads the Northern Texas PGA by five points with a score of 8.5 - 3.5 after day one of the 4th Annual Levy Cup Matches.
The Ryder Cup-style format features teams represented by six Assistant PGA Professionals (A-8) and six Senior PGA Professionals (any classification, aged 50 and older) who qualified through their respective Section Major Championships. The teams competed in Four-Ball and Foursome Matches today and will compete in Singles Matches tomorrow. These Matches were created in 2017 to celebrate Paul Levy who was completing his first year of a two-year term as President of the PGA of America.
After the morning Four-Ball Matches, the Southern Texas PGA team took a two-point lead finishing with 4 points. Highlights include the most decisive victory of the Matches thus far by Darek Franklin, PGA Assistant Professional at Austin Golf Club, and Steve Parker, PGA Life member, who defeated Spencer Dillard, PGA Assistant Professional at Preston Trail Golf Club, and Stuart Hendley, PGA Director of Instruction at Dallas Athletic Club 6&4.
In the afternoon Foursome Matches, Southern Texas took a 3 point lead, winning four of the six matches and halving a 5th. The Southern Texas PGA was propelled by an exciting 4&2 win by Alessandra Maurtua, PGA Assistant Professional at Walden on Lake Conroe Golf Club and Omar Uresti, Life Member over Brandon Bingaman, PGA Assistant Professional at Bent Tree Country Club and Rob Shields, CEO at The Winsford Group. The final day one score is 8.5 to 3.5 heading into the final day's Singles Matches.
Tim Hobby, PGA Teaching Professional at The Club at Sonterra, and Morgan DeSive, PGA Assistant Professional at Corpus Christi Country Club, are serving as Co-Captains for the Southern Texas PGA Team. The Northern Texas PGA Co-Captains are Mark Viskozki, PGA Director of Golf at Tangle Ridge Golf Club, and Thomas Devanna, PGA Assistant Professional at Tangle Ridge Golf Club.
One point is awarded to a winning match and a half point is awarded to any match that is tied after eighteen holes. The Matches are being contested at Pine Forest Country Club, a par 72 layout in Houston, Texas.
Singles Matches will begin at 7:15 a.m. off of the first tee on Tuesday morning. Day one results can be found on the Levy Cup Tournament Page.
