GEORGETOWN, TEXAS - The Northern Texas PGA was victorious over the Southern Texas PGA at the 6th Annual Levy Cup Matches by an overall point total of 14.5 to 9.5. This is NTPGA’s second straight victory in this cup matches. The Matches were clinched by the Northern Texas PGA when Gabe Reynolds, Teaching Professional at TopGolf-Dallas won his Singles Matches against Robert Scott, Teaching Professional at Royal Oaks Country Club 1 up.
“There was great playing from both teams and I am thrilled to be a part of it and take that trophy back to the NTPGA,” said NTPGA Captain Mickey Piersall, PGA Life member. “There’s just something about being a part of a team that is just special.”
The Northern Texas PGA got off to a fast start with winning the Four-Ball Session on Monday morning, 4.5-1.5. Players battled through hard conditions in the morning as the golf course received rain during play. While the STPGA started to make a comeback in the morning, Bruce Smith and Brandon Bingaman won the 18-hole in the last match of the morning session against Jeff Hunter and Dawson Kipniss to halt the momentum.
In the afternoon Foursome Matches, the STPGA started off very well leading in five out of six matches at one point, but the back-nine belonged to the NTPGA. The Foursome Matches ended in a 3-3 tie and a day one result of 7.5-4.5.
On the final day, the STPGA needed to get off to a fast start. Steve Jurgensen helped this cause with a 5&4 victory over Brian Norman but the next three matches all went to the NTPGA. The NTPGA won the Singles Matches 7 to 5.
“I am proud of the work my team did during the matches,” said Ronnie Fletcher, PGA Assistant Professional at Lakeside Country Club and captain of the Southern Texas PGA team. “The NTPGA was a strong team this year and they played very well over the two days. The STPGA will be back next year and ready to win the cup!”
The Levy Cup Matches is an annual competition between the Southern Texas PGA and the Northern Texas PGA Sections. This year was the first year the Levy Cup Teams were represented by three categories of professionals compared to just two.
Assistant Golf Professionals and PGA Professionals over 50 years old made up 8 spots and then the last 4 spots for each team were comprised of other classifications like Teaching Professionals. These Matches were created in 2017 to celebrate Paul Levy who was completing his first year of a two-year term as President of the PGA of America.
One point is awarded to a winning match and a half point is awarded to any match that is tied after eighteen holes. The Matches were contested at Cimarron Hills Golf & Country Club, a par 72 layout in Georgetown, Texas.
