RICHMOND, TX (November 14, 2023) - After Day One being rained out, the 2023 Texas Joe Black Cup Matches were decided by only the Singles Matches with the STPGA winning 6.5 to 5.5.
The only other time that the Matches were decided by only 12 points was in 1997 where Team STPGA won 10-2. At the start of the Matches, Team NTPGA needed six points to retain the Cup after their 2022 victory at Maridoe Golf Club. Team STPGA went down by two after the first three matches. A rally started with STPGA President, Bryan Minnick, PGA winning against NTPGA President, Jake McCullough, PGA with a final of 4 & 3. Team STPGA went on to win the next three matches taking a lead of two points.
After a consistent back and forth between the two teams, the final match came down to 18 to decide who was taking the Cup home. The match between Joe Mitchell, Jr., PGA and Lee Rhind, PGA started off with two great tee shots finishing in the fairway. Mitchell took the safer route after laying up on a difficult Par-5 and put it to 15 feet for birdie which clinched the point and the Matches.
Shadow Hawk Golf Club was an unbelievable host and we could not do this without our partners of Club Car, Mizzen+Main, and Cleveland-Srixon-Asics.
The overall record in these Matches now turned to the STPGA favor at 21-20-2.
