HUMBLE, TEXAS (July 20,2021) – Ben Willman, PGA Teaching Professional at Axis Golf Academy took the title at the 2021 Tradition Championship at Golf Club of Houston (Tournament Course) with a final score of 136 (-8).
“It feels like the first time. It feels great,” said Willman. “It’s been a while since I won so it feels good to win again.”
Starting off round one with an eagle on hole one, Willman carded an 18-hole total of 67 (-5). Coming into today’s round, Willman sat 1 stroke behind JJ Wood, PGA Director of Instruction at Golf Performance Group. Three back-to-back birdies on the back nine gave him a three-stroke lead to win the championship.
“I figured if I could just put a few holes together, it might turn things around and that’s kind of what happened. I got three birdies in a row, and took a little bit of a lead there, so that was good,” said Willman.
This marks the fourth Tradition Championship win for the Southern Texas PGA’s 2014, 2016, and 2019 Rolex Player of the Year.
The Tradition Championship also saw 15 PGA Professionals ages 50 and over competing in a separate Senior Division. Omar Uresti, PGA Life Member and Tim Thelen, PGA Assistant Golf Professional at Texas A&M Golf Club carded a 36-hole total of 137 (-7) leading them into a playoff. After two pars on the first playoff hole, Uresti caught a great break when his tee shot was pulled left and hit a tree, bouncing back into a location that allowed him to get to the green in two and eventually make par to win the playoff.
This marks the second year in a row Uresti has claimed the Tradition Championship title for the Senior Division after winning in 2020. It also marks his second major win of the year with the Southern Texas PGA.
“It feels good,” said Uresti. Going into today, I just tried to stay within myself, and just keep doing what I did yesterday, minus the bad shots.”
The Tradition Championship, presented by Surf & Turf Golf, Tournament Solutions, Club Car, Turf Hound, Biolyte, and PGA TOUR was contested at Golf Club of Houston’s Tournament Course, a 7,905-yard, par-72 course. This tournament is the second major championship in 2021 for the Southern Texas PGA and featured a total purse of $29,250.
