RICHMOND, TEXAS (June 13, 2023) – Austin Wylie, Assistant Professional at Mac Wylie Golf Center claimed his first ever Major win at the 2023 Classic Chevy HWY 6 & Classic Chevy Sugar Land Tradition Championship.
“It’s hard to win any of these major events, but after coming in second at last year's Tradition Championship, it felt really good to win, for sure,” said Wylie.
Wylie headed into his final round tied for the lead with Tirrel Baymon, PGA Director of Instruction at Cypresswood Golf Club at (-7) 65. Maintaining a lead of two to five strokes throughout the final round, Wylie carded a tournament total of (-8) 136 to finish with a two stroke lead and claim the championship.
“I just wanted to keep doing what I was doing, play aggressively, and try to birdie every hole,” said Wylie. “At the end of the day it all added up, but I just wanted to stay patient and keep giving myself opportunities. Fortunately it worked out in the end.”
Finishing with a twelve stroke lead, the Senior Division saw a three-peat today as Omar Uresti, PGA Life Member earned his third Major win of 2023. Uresti secured a strong lead heading into his final round after a bogey-free opening round of (-7) 65. Carding an eagle on hole number two of his final round, he increased his overall lead on the day and didn’t look back. Staying consistent until the end, Uresti finished at a total of (-11) 133 to win the Classic Chevy HWY 6 & Classic Chevy Sugar Land Tradition Championship.
“Coming from the Canadian Open last week, I think the course definitely prepared me for this week's event,” said Uresti. “The course played a lot longer there and the rough was deeper, so you couldn’t afford to miss fairways.”
This was the third major championship in 2023 for the Southern Texas PGA and was contested at Black Hawk Country Club, a par-72, 6,978-yard facility. This year’s championship featured Title Partner Classic Chevy HWY 6 & Classic Chevy Sugar Land as well as Presenting Partners Ahead, Club Car, Edison Golf, Flagd, GT Golf Supplies, Hole-in-One U.S.A and Tournament Solutions. This event featured a total purse of $32,000 for Open Division and $7,600 for Senior Division.
