HORSESHOE BAY, TEXAS (July 11, 2023) - The 2023 Texas Team Championship saw Spencer Dillard and Jeff Barton from Preston Trail Golf Club come out on top of the field of 100 teams with an impressive two-day low score of 60-66–126 (-17).
They took the lead in the first round with a total of 60 and having a two-stroke lead going into Round 2. Dillard and Barton still had to play great golf with Bogar and Martin closing in and cutting the lead down to just one stroke going into the Hole 18.
“On 18, we certainly changed our game plan knowing we only had a one shot lead. We both laid up and kept the bunkers out of play” said Barton.
Dillard added, “I laid up with a four iron and put in the fairway and made them have to make a putt versus us just giving it to them.”
This event is one of the most unique events in the country with PGA Professionals from both the Southern Texas and Northern Texas PGA Sections competing in the event. It has a long standing tradition of taking place at Horseshoe Bay and features two-player teams of PGA Members and Associates that work in Texas playing in a 2-man best ball format.
“It feels good. This was our third go at it and we finished second twice so to finally get over the hump it feels good.” responded Jeff after being asked about what the win means to them.
The putting contest was brought back again and played at the famous Whitewater Putting Course at Horseshoe Bay Resort, with a tie for first place. The two winning teams of Alex Calleja/Shaun Poe of Emerald Bay Club and Giovani Rodriguez-Marcelo of Odessa Country Club / Manny Ortiz of Iraan winning the tournament. This fun, laid back atmosphere allows for sponsors of the event to interact with PGA Professionals and enjoy each other’s company.
The Southern Texas PGA would like to thank all of our sponsors this year which included Destination Kohler, Adidas, Boxto, Donald Ross and Dan Liscio, Paylocity, E-Z-GO, PING, and Foresight Sales.
