KINGWOOD, TEXAS (August 10, 2021) – Ben Kern, PGA Head Professional at Georgetown Country Club has won the Southern Texas PGA TPx Communications Championship presented by GT Golf Supplies, Junior Golf Hub, TPC Industrial, and Hammock Beach Golf Resort & Spa after shooting 68-64 for a two-day total of 132 (-12). This is Kern’s second major championship win in 2021 after winning the Stroke Play Championship in June.
“So many times you play a round of golf and you think ‘I putted great but I didn’t do this great or that great,’” said Kern. “Today I hit the ball great, I hit every fairway, putted great, and I was just in sync all day.”
Kern had an impressive Round Two carding nine birdies to finish out the tournament six strokes ahead of Eric Bogar, PGA Assistant Professional at Golfcrest Country Club who recorded a final score of 138 (-6).
The TPx Communications Championship also included a Senior Division for PGA Professionals ages 50 and over. Tim Thelen, PGA Assistant Professional at Texas A&M University Golf Course fired eight birdies over the two rounds to take the lead over Billy Sitton, PGA Golf Executive at Triumph Golf and Robert Thompson, PGA Teaching Professional at Whispering Pines Golf Club. Thelen finished with a two-day score of 146 (+2) and Sitton and Thompson completed the tournament one stroke back at 147 (+3).
“This win feels good. I have already lost in two playoffs this year so I was due,” said Thelen. “I didn’t hit it well on the front nine yesterday and didn’t really hit it well until the last four holes today but I got it in.”
This was the third major championship in 2021 for the Southern Texas PGA and was contested at The Clubs of Kingwood (Deerwood), a par-72, 7,108-yard facility . This event featured a total purse of $22,225 for Open Division and $4,700 for Senior Division.
