TRINITY, TEXAS (June 27, 2022) - Rene Rangel, PGA Golf Executive of Sterling Golf and John Saffle, PGA Director of Golf at The Golf Club of Texas A&M took the 2022 9/9/9 Pro-Pro Championship at Whispering Pines Golf Club, but it didn’t come easy.
“Our best format was definitely the scramble. We had one bogey the whole nine,” said John. “But we also played well with alternate shot. Scratch that, we played well all day.”
After tying for first with Christy Longfield, PGA Director of Instruction and David Von Hoffmann, PGA Director of Golf at Spanish Oaks Golf Club at 9-under-par, the teams entered a playoff, played as modified alternate shot.
Playing hole 18 twice, both teams two putted for par, continuing the playoff to hole number one, where both stuck the green on their second shot. David missed the putt for par, opening the door for John and Rene to tap in for par and the win.
“We just wanted to hit solid through the playoff,” said Rene. “We hit good shots at the right time. When one of us was out, the other came through. Luckily we got it there on the last hole.”
The 9/9/9 Pro-Pro took place at Whispering Pines Golf Club, rated the #1 Golf Course in Texas by The Dallas Morning News. Designed by the Nicklaus Group, our Professionals played 18 holes across the Whispering Pines Course and 9 holes across The Needler par three course.
The 9/9/9 Pro-Pro is 27 holes of stroke play with alternating formats on each nine. On the first nine, each player played Four Ball, on the second 9 (the Needler), was played as modified alternate shot, and lastly on the last Nine players took part in a scramble. This year’s tournament was presented by Ouray Sportswear, Winston Collection, Horn Legend, E-Z-GO, PuttView Books, and XXIO.
