Southern Texas PGA Section Retains Texas Joe Black Cup

The Southern Texas PGA Section retained the Cup with 12 points.
Hockley, Texas – The Southern Texas PGA Section retained the 2019 Texas Joe Black Cup this afternoon at The Clubs at Houston Oaks, tying the Northern Texas Section 12-12 for only the second time in The Matches 39-year history. Coming into this morning’s Singles Matches, the Southern Texas Section led by 2 points.
The Southern Texas Section secured the 2019 Cup today when Chad Donegan, PGA Director of Golf at Landa Park Golf Course tied his Match against Britt Patton, PGA Director of Golf at The Vaquero Club. Donegan was 4 down with 6 to go when he made a hole-in-one on the 13th hole, spurring his 4-under par charge on the final 6 holes that was capped by a birdie on 18. Donegan won his last three holes resulting in a tie and a half point awarded to both Sections.

Dean Larsson, PGA Head Professional at Royal Oaks Country Club birdied hole 18 to win the final match of the day 1 Up for the Northern Texas Section and officially tie the Matches for the second time in its history.
The Texas Joe Black Cup Matches is a Ryder Cup-style annual meeting between the Southern and Northern Texas PGA Sections featuring teams of 12 players from each Section. Players on each team include the Section’s President, top playing PGA Professionals, and a Captain’s pick.
Yesterday’s competition included Four-Ball and Foursome Matches, and the tournament concluded today with Singles Matches.
With today’s tie, the Southern Texas PGA Section now has an overall Match record of 19-18-2.

The Texas Joe Black Cup Matches is annually the most anticipated competitive event in the Southern and Northern Texas PGA Sections. This fiercely contested rivalry between the two sister sections is marked by close matches, dramatic shots, uncompromising sportsmanship, and friendships that last a lifetime.
Established in 1981, the Texas Joe Black Cup Matches were created to honor Snyder native Joe Black, who was completing his first term as President of PGA of America.
