STPGA Takes 2 Point Advantage into Day Two Singles Matches
Hockley, Texas (October 28, 2019) – The Southern Texas PGA leads the Northern Texas PGA 7-5 after day one of the 39th Annual Texas Joe Black Cup Matches hosted at The Clubs at Houston Oaks.
This Ryder Cup-style format features teams of 12 from the Southern and Northern Texas PGA Sections represented by each Section’s President, top playing PGA Professionals, and a Captain’s pick. Day one saw the teams compete in Four-Ball and Foursomes Matches, and the Cup will conclude tomorrow with Singles Matches.
The Southern Texas PGA struck first during the Four-Ball Matches after Ben Kern, PGA Head Professional at Georgetown Country Club, and Casey Russell, PGA Director of Golf at Sweetwater Country Club won their Match against Billy Harris, PGA Head Professional at Dallas Country Club, and Ronny Glanton, PGA Head Professional at Sherrill Park Golf Course 3&2.
The second full point of the day went to Northern Texas when Bretty Beaty, PGA Head Professional at Dallas National Golf Club, and Britt Patton, PGA Director of Golf at The Vaquero Club, won 3&2 against David Buchheit, PGA Head Professionals Lakecliff Country Club, and David Von Hoffmann, PGA Director of Golf Spanish Oaks Golf Club. Following the morning Four-Ball Matches, the two Sections were tied 3-3.
Only two of this morning’s Four-Ball Matches went all the way to the 18th hole, both resulting in a tie.
The Southern Texas PGA claimed 4 points during the afternoon Foursomes Matches, putting them in the lead by 2 points heading into tomorrow’s Singles Matches.
The Southern Texas won the last two Matches of the day when Jesse Droemer, PGA Head Professional at Wildcat Golf Club, and Garrison Nordt, PGA Head Professional at Lochinvar Golf Club won their Match against Northern Texas 1 Up, and Joe Mitchell, PGA Director of Golf at Victoria Country Club, and Matt Trevino, PGA Director of Golf at Riverhill Country Club won their Match against Northern Texas 2&1. These two wins put Southern Texas PGA in a 7-5 lead at the end of Day One.
The Southern Texas PGA needs 5 points during tomorrow’s Singles Matches to retain the Cup in 2019. Single Matches will begin tomorrow at 8:20 a.m. on the par 71 course at The Clubs at Houston Oaks. Those interested can follow along with live scoring on the Texas Joe Black Cup Leaderboard.

The Texas Joe Black Cup Matches is annually the most anticipated competitive event in the Southern and Northern Texas PGA Sections. This fiercely contested rivalry between the two sister sections is marked by close matches, dramatic shots, uncompromising sportsmanship, and friendships that last a lifetime.
Established in 1981, the Texas Joe Black Cup Matches were created to honor Snyder native Joe Black, who was completing his first term as President of PGA of America.
