HOUSTON, TEXAS (August 24, 2021) – Ben Kern, PGA Head Professional at Georgetown Country Club claimed his third major win of 2021 at the Memorial Championship, our 4th Major of the year. Kern led the field by two strokes after carding a tournament total of 135 (-9).
“It feels good. This is my third year in the Section, and I’m starting to get some W’s and I feel like it’s starting to come together,” said Kern.
Heading into today’s final round, Kern lead the field by three strokes, with an impressive bogey free Round 1 of 64 (-8). Ben Willman, PGA Teaching Professional at Axis Golf Academy and Robert Scott, PGA Teaching Professional at Royal Oaks Country Club followed closely behind tied for second, with an 18-hole total of 67 (-5). With three holes left to play in the final round, Kern and Willman were tied through 15. With back-to-back birdies on 16 and 17, Kern took the lead to win the Open Division title.
The Memorial Championship also featured a Senior Division for PGA Professionals ages 50 and older. Omar Uresti, PGA Life Member ended with a 9-stroke lead, carding 68-65 to finish with a tournament total of 133 (-11). This marks back-to-back wins at the Memorial Championship for Uresti, after claiming the title back in 2020, as well as his 3rd Major win of the year.
“It always feels good to win. Back-to-back is something special. It’s usually hard to do, and this week I felt pretty good about the game coming in, so it definitely helped me out on this golf course,” said Uresti.
The Memorial Championship, presented by Levelwear, Nexbelt, Flagd, Birdie Box, and the PGA TOUR was contested at Memorial Park Golf Course, a 6,902-yard, par 72 course, also home of the Houston Open. This Championship marks the fourth and final Major Championship for the Section before the Southern Texas PGA Professional Championship next month. This event featured a total purse of $23,075 for Open Division and $4,725 for Senior Division.
