SUGAR LAND, TEXAS (April 5, 2022) – Corey Roberson, PGA Director of Golf at The Clubs at Cordillera Ranch wins in a sudden death playoff to claim the Open Division Championship title at the Classic Chevy Sugar Land & Classic Chevy HWY 6 Championship with rounds of 71-68 for a two-day total of 139 (-5).
“It’s really special to win my first individual title,” said Roberson. “I struggled a little bit today and it was fun to fight through that and be in contention and to get after it.”
Roberson started strong in Round Two with birdies on the first three holes, and finished the two days with nine birdies. He was matched up with Ross Prachar, PGA Teaching Professional at Golf Club of Houston in the sudden death playoff where he won the title with a par on the first playoff hole.
Heading into the final round, Roberson trailed the solo leader, Chris Benestante, Assistant Professional at Spanish Oaks Country Club by two strokes who finished Round One at 69 (-3).
The Classic Chevy Sugar Land & Classic Chevy HWY 6 Championship also featured a Senior Division for PGA Professionals ages 50 and older. Omar Uresti climbed to the top, carding a 70-66 to finish with a tournament total of 136 (-8).
“I knew I needed to make birdies,” said Uresti. “I started off hot with two birdies and on 12 I was able to hit the green in two and make the putt for eagle which really kept me going.”
After trailing by three strokes behind Robert Thompson, PGA Teaching Professional at Whispering Pines Golf Club and Tim Thelen, PGA Assistant Professional at Texas A&M Golf Course after Round One, Uresti went bogey free in Round Two with an eagle on Hole 12 and birdie on Hole 18 to defend his Senior Division Champion title.
The Classic Chevy Sugar Land & Classic Chevy HWY 6 Championship presented by Nexbelt, Prize Possessions, TurfHound, Texoma Golf, PXG, and PRG was contested at Riverbend Country Club, a 6,860-yard, par 72 course. This Championship marks the first Major Championship for the Section in 2022 and featured a total purse of $33,000 for Open Division and $6,400 for Senior Division.
