Sainz Jr. & Uresti win back-to-back Section Majors.
THE WOODLANDS, TEXAS (June 16, 2020) -
Carlos Sainz Jr., Teaching Professional at GolfTEC – Upper Kirby has won the Southern Texas PGA Spring Classic presented by Hole-in-One USA and PGA TOUR shooting 68-70 for a two-day total of 138 (-6). This marks the second 2020 Section Major and third Southern Texas PGA win for Sainz Jr. who previously claimed the title at the TPx Communications Championship and the National Car Rental Assistant Southern Texas PGA Professional Championship in May.
“It’s an honor to win any tournament in the Section,” said Sainz Jr. “I’m trying to play every tournament really well, which is something that is easier said than done, but I’m off to a good start this year.”
Sainz Jr. had an impressive Round Two carding five birdies to finish out the tournament 3 strokes ahead of Garret Driver, Assistant Professional at Wildcat Golf Club who recorded a final score of 141 (-3).
“I had a bit of a hiccup on hole 6 today, but I knew that I just had to keep moving forward,” said Sainz Jr. “When the course is playing a little harder, you have to focus on doing a hard reset to refocus. I’ve had to do that a lot in my career.”
The Spring Classic also included a Senior Division for PGA Professionals ages 50 and over. Omar Uresti, PGA Life Member fired eight birdies during today’s round to strengthen his lead over Susie Redman-Kirk, PGA Teaching Professional at Golf Trails at The Woodlands. Uresti finished with a two-day score of 135 (-9) and Redman-Kirk completed the tournament in second place at 141 (-3).
“Yesterday was a little shaky, but I was able to get the round in under par,” said Uresti. “Today, I hit it much better and made some putts on the front nine to get off to a good start.
Uresti, like Sainz Jr., is claiming his second Section Major and third Southern Texas PGA win for 2020. He previously won the Senior Division at the
TPx Communications Championship as well as the Senior Southern Texas PGA Professional Championship in May.
The Spring Classic was originally scheduled for March of this year but was rescheduled due to the coronavirus pandemic. This is the second major championship in 2020 for the Southern Texas PGA and was contested at the par-72, 7,018-yard Tournament Course at The Woodlands Club.
